A Very Treasure Island 60th Birthday Party
What do you give as a gift to a city that has everything? How about a big party in a big, friendly park featuring the best bands playing blues, bluegrass and swing? Done, done and done – well, as of Saturday, May 2nd, it will be – when Treasure Island, Florida celebrates its 60th year as a city.
The celebration, called “A Very Treasure Island 60th Birthday Party,” happens in Treasure Island’s Community Center Park and features legacy musicians who have played Treasure Island venues over the years. Headlining the show is the big-band swing of the 22-piece Tomkats Jazz Orchestra, the Bilmar Beach Resort’s house band for over a decade. The Tomkats play at 8pm.
Florida native T.C. Carr, one of the premier harmonica players and a fan favorite wherever he plays, brings his original American blues and roots band Bolts of Blue to the party at 6:30pm. T.C. is a familiar performer to many on the Gulf beaches “back in the day” as a founding member of the Mad Beach Band.
A true Florida cracker, Sarasota Slim plays blues, funk, boogie and slide guitar with heaps of warm Southern charm. Slim is as authentic and talented as they come, having earned his "Sarasota Slim" nickname from Rock Bottom (with whom he played, in The Jungle Bushmasters and The Cuttaways). Slim and his band take the stage at 5:15pm
Some of the best pickin’ around - bluegrass, country, rock and even a little bit of beach music – comes from show openers CornFused, who blend guitar, mandolin, banjo, slide, upright bass, gorgeous vocals and infuse it with the improvisational elements of jazz to create a sound all their own. CornFused play at 4pm.
“A Very Treasure Island 60th Birthday Party” is produced by the City of Treasure Island Parks & Recreation Department and is presented by Saunders & Walker, Consumer Justice Attorneys. Food and beverages available in the Bucky the Pirate Food Court. Concertgoers should bring a lawn blanket or beach chairs, and parking is available for $15 in the parking lots surrounding the Community Center Park. Info: 727-547-4575
